Frequency Memory: My New Listening Game

Published by Joseph SARDIN, on

Summary

  • Frequency Memory is BigSoundBank's new free sound game.
  • A frequency plays only once, and you must find it again from memory with a slider.
  • Four difficulty levels, playable right in your browser.
  • Play solo or with several players on the same device.
  • A listening exercise that is harder than it looks.

Think you have a good ear? I built a game to put it to the test. It is called Frequency Memory, and it joins BigSoundBank's collection of free sound games. The idea fits in one sentence: a sound frequency plays only once, you memorize it, then you adjust a slider to find it again from memory. No second listen, no reference point, just your ear and your focus. It is free, it runs right in your browser, and headphones are obviously recommended.

A Simple Rule, a Tough Challenge

The exercise looks harmless. It is not. Our ears excel at comparing two sounds played one after the other: the second one is higher, or lower, and we hear it instantly. But holding on to a precise pitch after a few seconds of silence, with nothing to anchor it to, is a whole different story. Absolute pitch memory is fragile for most of us, and it is precisely the gap between what you think you remembered and what you reproduce with the slider that makes the game so much fun. Sometimes you turn out to be surprisingly accurate, sometimes you are way off, without always understanding why.

It is also a great way to get familiar with the concept of frequency beyond pure theory: by experiencing it, slider in hand.

Four Levels, Solo or With Friends

The game offers four difficulty levels, so you can progress at your own pace, from curious beginner to trained ear. And since the best challenges are the ones you share, it can also be played by several people on the same device: everyone takes a turn, and the scores speak for themselves. It makes an excellent little exercise for families, sound colleagues, or workshops, and a fun way to become aware of how our auditory memory actually works.

A Cousin From the Web

Fans of the genre may recognize a family resemblance with Dialed.gg Sound, an online game that also has you recreate tones from memory using a slider. Both games share the same core idea: testing our memory for pitch, a skill we believe is solid right up until the moment we actually try it. Each game has its own formula, its own modes, and its own vibe, and nothing stops you from trying both to compare your performances.

So grab your headphones: which level of Frequency Memory did you manage to conquer? Tell me about your triumphs, or your setbacks, in the comments!
