Fixed Frequency Generator

Before clicking Play, lower the volume on your speakers or headphones — some frequencies (very low, very high, or loud) can damage your hearing or equipment.

Humans typically perceive frequencies between 20 Hz and 20 kHz. But not all sound cards, speakers and headphones reproduce the full range. This tool plays up to 3 oscillators simultaneously — useful to test harmonics, binaural beats, or simulate a chord.

Use cases

  • Personal hearing test: explore your perceptual curve from 20 Hz to 20 kHz.
  • Speaker / headphone calibration (1 kHz at 0 dBFS for level measurements).
  • Sound design: sine for bass, square for retro effects, sawtooth for bright textures.
  • Octave check: 440 Hz vs 880 Hz to verify transposition.
  • Binaural beats: combine two close frequencies (e.g. 200 and 210 Hz) to hear a 10 Hz beat.

FAQ

Which waveform should I pick?

Sine: pure tone, ideal for testing. Square: rich in odd harmonics, hollow timbre. Triangle: softer, fewer harmonics. Sawtooth: full harmonics, bright timbre.

Why don't my speakers reproduce some frequencies?

Speakers have a limited usable range (typically 60 Hz – 18 kHz consumer-grade). Below this, bass rolls off; above, treble drops. Use a sub or studio headphones to test the extremes.

How to generate binaural beats?

Enable two close frequencies (e.g. 200 Hz and 207 Hz). The difference (7 Hz) will be perceived as a beat. With headphones, the effect becomes binaural (different per ear).

What is 440 Hz exactly?

It's "A4", the universal reference pitch in Western music since 1939. All modern tuning forks are calibrated to it.
