The documentary series Earthsounds, available on Apple TV+, offers a fascinating dive into the rarely heard sounds of nature. Narrated by actor Tom Hiddleston, this 12-part production takes viewers through some of the planet’s most spectacular habitats, from the Queensland rainforest to tropical coral reefs, the glaciers of Antarctica, and the deserts of Namibia. What sets Earthsounds apart from other wildlife documentaries is its pioneering use of cutting-edge audio technology, capturing natural sounds that are subtle yet extraordinary.

This series, a collaboration between Offspring Films and Apple TV+, was filmed over three and a half years, covering more than 3,000 hours of recordings in 20 countries across all seven continents. The goal of the series is to reveal the hidden ways animals use sound in their environments, often in extreme conditions. From the love songs of snow leopards to the murmurs of ostrich chicks still in their eggs, each episode immerses us in soundscapes as varied as they are unexpected.

Highlights of the series include musical spiders, walruses performing underwater courtship rituals, and even the captivating music produced by the northern lights. The episode set in ancient Australian forests, for example, features crocodiles protecting their young with sound signals, while koalas release powerful roars to assert their presence.

Premiering on February 23, 2024, the series is also a tribute to the auditory ecosystem of our planet, often overshadowed by the visual impact of traditional documentaries. Using state-of-the-art equipment, Earthsounds captures sonic details that are imperceptible to the human ear, revealing a hidden dimension of wildlife.

If you’re a fan of nature documentaries or passionate about audio, Earthsounds offers an immersive and captivating experience that will awaken your curiosity and continuously surprise you.

What sound of nature fascinates you the most, and would you like to hear it revealed in a documentary like this one?
