According to a study, a significant proportion of people can distinguish the sounds produced by hot and cold liquids, even without prior explanation. About 96% of participants correctly identified the temperatures by listening only to the sound of the poured liquids. This demonstrates that our brain is surprisingly sensitive to auditory cues related to the physical properties of liquids, such as viscosity and density, which vary with temperature. These findings suggest that the association between sound and temperature is deeply rooted in our sensory perception, even if often unconscious. This ability may be linked to evolution, where perceiving subtle environmental nuances aided survival.

Why do these sounds differ?

This intriguing sound variation finds its explanation in the physical properties of water. Temperature influences viscosity: hot water is less viscous than cold water. This difference alters the formation of droplets and bubbles during pouring, thereby affecting the emitted sound frequencies. Cold water tends to produce higher-pitched sounds due to its higher viscosity, while hot water generates lower and more muffled tones.
