Silence, the Sound That Makes so Much Noise

On La Sonothèque, one audio file is surprisingly popular: silence. Not silence recorded with a microphone in an isolated room, but true digital silence: an audio file containing a zero-level signal, clean, calibrated, and generated by software. And against all expectations, it’s the 4th most downloaded file on the platform.

“One minute of silence” has found its way into countless situations: pauses in video edits, silent gaps between tracks, stabilizing audio timelines, technical tests, or syncing sound effects on an editing timeline. The uses are surprisingly numerous, practical, and often very creative.

That observation led to the creation of a dedicated silence page: a simple, effective generator to produce a custom silence file in different formats (16- or 24-bit, 44.1 or 48 kHz, mono or stereo) and durations. Because even silence sometimes needs to be adjusted down to a tenth of a second.
