Juan José López Díez: Biotremology and Environmental Sound
Juan José López Díez is a researcher and sound artist known for his expertise in biotremology. This discipline explores vibrations produced and perceived by insects through plants and surfaces, an often overlooked but crucial aspect of ecosystems. His work at the National Institute of Biology in Slovenia focuses on these invisible interactions, particularly for biological pest management.
Vibroscape and "Insect Rhythmic Union"
In 2023, at the Klang Moor Schopfe Festival in Switzerland, López Díez co-created the installation "Insect Rhythmic Union" with Ludwig Berger. This project explores the vibroscape of an alpine wetland meadow by capturing insect vibrational signals with a network of laser Doppler vibrometers. With 150 hours of recordings edited into a composition, the piece transforms these vibrations into an immersive experience through a wooden cabin equipped with 12 body speakers. The floor and walls vibrate, plunging visitors into the microscopic communication of insects, simulating the experience of a meadow full of vibratory life.
This innovative approach, combining art and science, allows for a different discovery of the importance of insects in ecosystems and reveals natural interactions often invisible. The piece invites reflection on biodiversity and hidden ecological dynamics.
What do you think of this artistic and scientific approach? Can it change our perception of natural landscapes?
