Picture an old forest, the kind where trunks seem to carry centuries in their grain. One tree, older than the rest, has been dead for a long time. The wind keeps worrying at it, the fibers split, and then everything gives way. There’s the scrape of branches, the rush of displaced air, and finally that heavy, blunt impact with the ground. And yet: nobody’s there. No hiker, no recorder, no hidden ear in the moss.

So the question returns, simple on the surface and stubborn underneath: does a tree make a sound when it falls if no one is there to hear it?

Science: something definitely happens

For physics, the scene is straightforward: the fall disturbs the medium. The trunk transfers vibrations into the ground and the air, and those pressure variations travel outward. No medium, no propagation; but in a real Earth forest, air is an excellent messenger. In other words, even without a witness, there is an objective, measurable phenomenon: an acoustic wave.

In a CrowdScience segment (BBC World Service), psychoacoustics expert Stefan Bleeck (University of Southampton) makes a key distinction: without a listener, there’s no auditory experience, but that doesn’t erase the existence of acoustic waves or their effects on the environment. The branch that shakes, the leaf that trembles, the dust that lifts—those are already answers of a kind.

Perception: sound is also a story the brain tells

Where it gets tricky is that the word “sound” doesn’t only mean a wave. It also means what we live through when we hear. And that lived experience is private, subjective, and sometimes misleading.

Bleeck likes to demonstrate this with a famous auditory illusion: the Shepard-Risset glissando. To your ears, a tone seems to rise forever, as if it’s chasing a higher pitch without ever reaching the top. The world isn’t actually climbing to infinity—your perception is. The effect echoes the Penrose “impossible staircase”: you feel like you’re always going up, even though you’re looping back to the same level.

In other words, between the wave and the “heard sound,” there is translation. In the inner ear, tiny hair cells convert motion in the cochlea’s fluid into nerve impulses. And once the signal is in the brain’s electrical language, what you perceive depends on interpretation, attention, expectation, and context. Sound, as experience, isn’t just out there: it’s also in here.

Philosophy: what if the question is really about “reality”?

This famous riddle is often linked to George Berkeley. His radical idea can be summed up like this: what exists depends on a mind. Not just sounds, but objects themselves. On that view, asking whether the tree makes a sound without an observer almost turns into asking whether the tree truly “is” at all, absent any perception.

Other philosophers approach the problem from a different angle. Descartes, in the Meditations, pushes doubt to the edge: what if everything is a dream? Science fiction later updated that shiver with the “brain in a vat,” fed perfect illusions by a machine. Here, the falling tree becomes a test: what does our trust in an external world rest on, if our senses can be fooled?

Hume: don’t go crazy, keep living

If you keep doubting, you can end up doubting everything, all the time. David Hume offers a pragmatic exit: excessive skepticism produces no lasting good. In plain terms: if we fully surrender to the idea that everything might be illusion, life becomes unworkable. So we accept—provisionally but firmly—that the world exists, that it pushes back, that it answers, and that we can get to know it.

And what about quantum physics?

The story gets even stranger when quantum mechanics enters. Some popular explanations make it sound as if the observer “creates” outcomes, because measurement plays such a central role in the theory. That has fueled the idea that without an observer, certain facts wouldn’t happen the same way. Which invites the tempting wink: does the tree really fall, or does it fall “only when you look”?

In reality, the fight is about interpretation: what does the theory say the world is like? The Copenhagen interpretation was long treated as the orthodox line. And among the alternatives, the “many-worlds” interpretation embraces a dizzying conclusion: every possible outcome is realized, each in its own branch. In a vivid, metaphorical sense, the tree could “fall and not fall”—but not within the same experienced world.

Conclusion: the right answer depends on what you mean by “sound”

If “making a sound” means producing an acoustic pressure wave, then yes: the tree makes a sound even when it’s alone. If “making a sound” means being heard and lived as sound, then no: without an ear and a brain, there is no auditory experience.

And maybe that’s the riddle’s hidden gift: it forces us to separate the world that vibrates from the mind that listens, the physics of a signal from the poetry of sensation. When you say “sound,” what comes first for you—the wave in the air, or the emotion that appears when someone hears it?
