Absorbrella: Outdoor Acoustic Comfort

Published by Joseph SARDIN, on

In densely urbanized or bustling outdoor environments, ambient noise is often overlooked, yet it directly affects well-being, focus, and the quality of conversation. With the Absorbrella, which I discovered through SonoMag, the French company Isinac has designed an acoustically active textile solution specifically tailored for terraces, cafés, rooftops, or urban patios.

Unlike traditional shade sails or physical barriers, the Absorbrella integrates a high-performance sound absorption system in the form of a dome or stretched membrane. This solution is based on a patented multilayer composition combining porous textiles, membranes, and absorbent wool, capable of addressing a wide frequency spectrum.

Scientifically Measured Acoustic Performance

The core of the system relies on broadband sound absorption technology. In a reverberation chamber, following ISO 354 standards, the Absorbrella achieves a remarkable sound absorption coefficient αw = 1. This means it absorbs 100% of incoming sound energy with zero reflection.

Key acoustic measurements include:

  • Peak efficiency at 500 Hz and 1000 Hz — the dominant frequencies of human speech;
  • Significant absorption starting at 125 Hz, critical for low-frequency urban noise such as traffic or crowd murmur;
  • Up to 5 dB reduction in vertical sound propagation, measured at 3 meters in height — significantly minimizing disturbance to upper-level residents.

This reduction has a tangible effect: a 3 dB drop already corresponds to halving perceived sound energy. At 5 dB, the improvement in comfort is substantial, especially in outdoor dining areas.

Absorption + Isolation: A Dual Approach

While most outdoor structures offer only reflective or diffusive surfaces, the Absorbrella combines two complementary mechanisms:

  1. Sound absorption, which captures and dissipates acoustic energy within its textile layers;
  2. Direct attenuation, enabled by the orientation and density of the materials, limiting transmission upwards or into the surrounding environment.

It doesn’t create "silence," but redefines zones of acoustic pressure: less reverberation below the canopy, and less noise leakage above.

A Tool for Sound-Conscious Urban Design

The Absorbrella fully aligns with today’s thinking around livable sound environments. It targets both the HORECA sector and municipalities looking for gentle, non-invasive solutions. It treats sound at the source, without the need for rigid or heavy installations.

Its portability and adaptability make it ideal as a temporary or seasonal installation for public events or urban markets. It is well suited for what is emerging as event-based acoustic design, a discipline with great potential.

This textile innovation invites us to rethink the role of soft materials in combating noise. What about you — do you think acoustic comfort should become a standard requirement for all outdoor installations?
